This is an invitation for the members of the Serbian community to help with establishing a scholarship which would be awarded to the best students who are involved in the Serbian community activities and who would like to continue their post-secondary education at the University of Waterloo.

The description of the scholarship is as follows:

"A group from the Serbian community is establishing this award to encourage post-secondary education and academic excellence in students who have made a significant contribution to the Serbian community and who have decided to study at the University of Waterloo."

We are asking all members of the Serbian community, who agree with us that education is very important for survival of the ethnic community in diaspora, to help us collect the necessary amount of money for establishing the Serbian Education Fund. The University of Waterloo will invest the collected money in different funds. The interest gained by the invested money will be awarded to the best students among our young people. The scholarship will become an important component of their resume and it will noticeably improve their chances for further education or in a job search. Good students will become good lawyers, doctors, teachers, and engineers. We all know that well-respected professionals are priceless ambassadors for their ethnic community.

The scholarship will be awarded every school year. The words 'Serbian', 'education' and 'fund' will appear one after the other in numerous important official documents, and this will be an excellent advertisement for the whole Serbian community of the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

Once established, the Serbian Education Fund will exist forever as one of the University of Waterloo scholarships. Money can be added to the principal at any time, which will increase the earned interest. Initially, we will collect $25,000, which is the minimum University of Waterloo needs to invest. The value of the scholarship will be determined by the interest earned in each year. It is anticipated that the investment of the above amount would earn interest of $500-600 per year.

The money can be donated through cheques addressed to University of Waterloo, with the addition "for the Serbian Education Fund" on the memo line. You will find enclosed a simple pledge form, designed by Office of Development staff at the University of Waterloo. This pledge form can be used if you choose to donate money by monthly installments or over a three year period. Donations higher than $20 are tax deductible and the University of Waterloo will issue a tax receipt.
